Truth and Reconciliation

The Lincoln Alexander School of Law has made it a priority to build relationships with and to serve Indigenous communities. This commitment is embedded as a core value in our Academic Plan. We are undertaking significant steps to meet the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and to contribute to the important work of reconciliation as follows:

  • We are committed to indigenizing legal education now and into the future. We will ensure that the impact of Canadian laws and colonizing policies on Indigenous people, Indigenous legal traditions, and the legitimacy of Aboriginal rights (including land title and self-determination rights) are prominently featured in our curriculum, teaching, and clinical and experiential programs. Our faculty currently includes two tenure-track members who are Indigenous with research interests and expertise in Indigenous law and legal theory, and two Indigenous practitioners/co-teachers. As we continue to grow our faculty over the coming years, we plan to recruit more Indigenous faculty members.
  • We are committed to providing a strong support network for our Indigenous students. We have created mentorship and scholarship programs for our Indigenous students so that they feel welcomed and supported throughout their law school experience. We also pledge to work with the Indigenous Law Students' Association to bring awareness to legal issues affecting Indigenous communities through events, visiting speakers and other forms of knowledge sharing.

Future initiatives include hiring a Director of Indigenous Education and Reconciliation Initiatives, extending student development and support, and delivering co-curricular programming on access to justice and Indigenous law. Please  (PDF file) read our full response to the TRC report here.
