Miranda Kirby, a professor of physics in the Faculty of Science at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), has been selected for membership in the Royal Society of Canada’s (RSC) College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. The RSC honours emerging Canadian leaders for exceptional accomplishments in their fields, selecting members through a competitive, peer-reviewed process.

As a leading lung imaging researcher, Kirby is globally recognized for her research. She has developed novel methods and measurements that improve early detection and disease treatment, resulting in better patient outcomes.

Kirby enhances current methods through her innovative imaging biomarkers and AI-based tools, extracting new, previously undetected information from existing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) images. Her work in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) detection and forecasting is now integrated into international clinical trials. She has also created MRI analysis techniques that don’t use radiation, making them safer for children.

“It’s an honour to be named as a Member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists,” Kirby said. “I want to extend my gratitude to my fellow researchers, students and collaborators here in Canada and across the globe.”

A Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Quantitative Imaging, Kirby is also the recipient of the Fleischner Memorial Award, which honours early-career investigators advancing imaging of the respiratory system and the Young Investigator Research Award from the Ontario Lung Association.

“Congratulations to professor Kirby for her membership to the RSC College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists,” said Steven N. Liss, TMU’s vice-president, research and innovation. “Her innovative work deepens our understanding of lung diseases and is improving the health outcomes of Canadians and patients worldwide.”

David Cramb, Dean of the Faculty of Science, acknowledged the impact that Kirby has had on her students. “Professor Kirby is a shining example of supporting and promoting a positive learning environment for the graduate and undergraduate students in her research group,” he shared. “Our faculty is collectively proud of their accomplishments.”

As one of 59 new Members of the RSC College, Kirby will be welcomed during the formal induction ceremony of new RSC Fellows and Members at the 2025 Celebration of Excellence and Engagement in Montreal, Quebec, on November 14, 2025.
