Transactive Energy Distribution System Laboratory

Transactive Energy Distribution System Laboratory

Economics meets energy in our revolutionary new research facility

In 2019, the Centre for Urban Energy opened its Transactive Energy Distribution System (TEDS) Laboratory. The TEDS Lab is a world first and was designed by our research team to test, model and analyze transactive energy distribution systems.

Transactive energy is a revolutionary market-based peer-to-peer electricity distribution system that incorporates distributed energy resources (DERs) such as solar panels, electric vehicles and batteries, and enables the buying or selling of electricity from or to anyone at any time within the system.

Transactive systems have been demonstrated to be successful in other domains such as retail, via platforms such as Amazon and eBay, and transit, via platforms such as Uber and Lyft. Applying this model to energy would enable a new level of control for consumers to best manage their energy use and transform the economic viability of DERs, paving the way for greener energy systems, incentivizing private investment and innovation, while improving system reliability and resilience.
