Professor Liping Fang has been recognized by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) with the Group Decision and Negotiation (GDN) Appreciation for Outstanding Service Award. Announced at the 26th International Conference on Group Decision and Negotiation in Poland, the award is a reflection of Fang’s outstanding service contributions in the field.

A Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) professor in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Mechatronics Engineering, Fang has long been involved with the INFORMS GDN community. He served on the GDN Section Board for eight years, and in the role as President from 2023 to 2025. Fang has also been heavily involved in supporting GDN conferences, proceedings and award committees as Program Co-Chair and General Co-Chair. Notably, he helped to organize the first virtual GDN conference in 2021 in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A passionate researcher, Fang has served on GDN’s journal editorial board and is currently the Departmental Editor of the Applied Game Theory and Social Choice area. In 2020, he received the INFORMS GDN Section Award, in recognition of his outstanding research contributions. Fang’s impressive research achievements include the co-creation of the Graph Model for Conflict Resolution (GMCR) methodology. The GMCR is a comprehensive, practical, and extensible framework designed to systematically investigate real-world strategic conflicts. Fang is also known for applying GDN techniques to environmental management problems. A highlight of this work is an allocation model used for distributing water in river basins to competing users equitably, efficiently and sustainably.
