Academic Guidelines and Forms
This page brings together the guidelines and forms that apply specifically to graduate programs in the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science (FEAS), especially our research-based PhD and MASc programs. For policies, dates and forms that apply to all TMU graduate students, see the TMU-wide resources at the bottom of this page.
FEAS Graduate Academic Guidelines
Guidelines for Manuscript-based Dissertations/Theses
FEAS and TMU allow you to present your master’s thesis or PhD dissertation in one of two formats: traditional (monograph style) or manuscript-based. A manuscript-based thesis or dissertation includes the text of one or more papers you wrote as the main author or a main co-author. These papers must be published or submitted for publication.
Procedure for Hybrid PhD and MASc Oral Examinations
All PhD and MASc oral examinations in FEAS, including candidacy exams and final defences, take place in a hybrid format. Piloted in fall 2025, this procedure now applies across all FEAS graduate programs. Review it to understand the principles that guide your exam.
FEAS Graduate Forms
- (PDF file) Transfer from MASc to PhD form: If you’re an MASc student with a strong academic record and demonstrated research potential, you may be able to transfer to the PhD program before completing your master’s degree. Students should discuss this option with their supervisor before completing this form. Transfers are granted only in exceptional cases.
