MA Admission Requirements

Applications to the MA program must be submitted via the Yeates School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.  Prior to submitting a formal application, we invite all potential applicants to tell us about themselves by completing our "expression of interest" form:

Potential applicants who meet the admissions requirements listed below may be eligible for an application fee waiver.


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

• Minimum of at least a 3.0/4.33 (B) average (or equivalent) in the last four semesters of undergraduate study in a four-year honours program (or equivalent).  Questions regarding equivalency should be directed to the TMU Graduate Admissions Office:  gradhelp@torontomu.ca

• Demonstrate the necessary background to pursue graduate-level coursework in economics. For example, it is recommended that applicants from TMU take the following undergraduate courses (and all of their mathematics/statistics prerequisites):

  • ECN 301 Intermediate Macroeconomics I and ECN 600 Intermediate Macroeconomics II
  • ECN 504 Intermediate Microeconomics I and ECN 700 Intermediate Microeconomics II
  • ECN 627 Econometrics I and ECN 702 Econometrics II

If you have not taken courses equivalent to those listed above, you can enroll in them through the Chang School of Continuing Education at TMU, where these courses are included in the  Certificate in Economics: Theory and Applications (opens in new window) . REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

  • Unofficial transcript(s)
  • Two letters of recommendation. Students applying for the full-time program must provide letters of recommendation from former instructors (post-secondary level); while those applying for the part-time program may substitute one letter from their current employer for one of the academic references.
  • Resume/CV
  • Statement of interest. Your statement should be approximately 500 words long and include the following:
    -your reasons for graduate study in Economics;
    -the research interest(s) you may wish to pursue;
    -how your previous studies and experience have prepared you for the MA program; and
    -your career objectives and how the MA program relates to them.

Note that GRE is not required.  If your undergraduate institution is located outside of Canada, you may be required to provide certification of English language proficiency; see here for more information.
