MA Admission Requirements

•Minimum of at least a 3.0/4.33 (B) average (or equivalent) in the last four semesters (or terms) of undergraduate study in a four-year honours program (or equivalent).  Questions regarding equivalency, please direct to the Graduate Admissions Office: grdadmit@torontomu.ca

•Demonstrate the necessary background to pursue graduate-level work in economics. For example, an applicant from Toronto Metropolitan University should take all of the following undergraduate courses (or their equivalents) at a minimum:

  • ECN 301 Intermediate Macroeconomics I
  • ECN 600 Intermediate Macroeconomics II
  • ECN 504 Intermediate Microeconomics I
  • ECN 700 Intermediate Microeconomics II
  • ECN 627 Econometrics I
  • ECN 702 Econometrics II
  • ECN 189 Mathematics for Economics I
  • ECN 230 Mathematics for Economics II

In addition, it is very strongly recommended that applicants take at least one advanced-level economics course (e.g., ECN 715 Advanced Microeconomics, ECN 724 Advanced Econometrics, or ECN 815 Advanced Macroeconomics) as well as at least one additional course in mathematics (e.g., MTH 110 Discrete Mathematics I, MTH 330 Calculus and Geometry, etc.).  Applicants should also have some previous programming experience (e.g., Python, etc.).

•Two letters of recommendation. Students applying for the full-time program must provide letters of recommendation from former instructors (post-secondary level); while those applying for the part-time program may substitute one letter from their current employer for one of the academic references.

•Resume/CV

•Provide a Statement of Interest. Your statement should be approximately 500 words long and include the following:

•your reasons for graduate study in Economics;

•the research interest(s) you may wish to pursue;

•how your previous studies and experience have prepared you for the MA program; and

•your career objectives and how the MA program relates to them.
