“Graduating with co-op at Toronto Metropolitan University gives you a competitive advantage. The co-op terms provided not only substantial experience professionally but also allowed me to forge long-lasting connections and meet many amazing, experienced and nurturing people. I discovered so many new aspects of Public Health and various career paths unknown to me and this insight is invaluable.” Svitlana B., Public Health & Safety Co-op
“Co-op was actually the main reason why I decided to join TMU. I knew that the Co-op program would enable me to expand on what I learned inside the classroom through employment.” Hassaan A., - Computer Science Co-op
“Some benefits of being in the co-op program are being ready to be out there in the real world, meeting people that can help in your career, and learning a lot of things that you can apply in life.” Iris T., Chemistry Co-op
“Coming from a program like mathematics with innumerable different career pathways, co-op has opened doors to opportunities I never knew existed.” Ben C., Financial Mathematics Co-op
“The best thing about Co-op is the chance to make a name for myself and feel confident in my job experiences before graduating from university.” Nora D., - English Co-op
“As a co-op student, you get opportunities to work in the field you are studying and get to see what the industry looks like. That helps you have a better sense of what you will do once you graduate and decide if it is the right path for you. To me, it was absolutely worth it to extend my degree by one year to participate in Co-op as it allowed me to make an informed decision on my steps after graduation.” Marsye A., - Chemical Engineering Co-op
"I have enjoyed all of my co-ops and learned something new at each workplace. Being a part of the co-op program has provided me with many benefits including helping me with future career choices, improving my soft skills, an advantage in classes and helping me build my professional network of contacts."
Jessica F.,- Public Health & Safety
“I was always eager to get my foot in the door and find out what life was like working in health & safety. Looking back at it now, I do not know what I would be doing if it were not for co-op. I would probably still be working at my old fast-food job. My position now is almost like a dream position, and I could not be happier. Co-op has shaped my career path by providing me with the fundamentals and building blocks required in the safety industry. After finishing my second term at my current position, my employer offered to hire me after graduation, which is the best a co-op student can hope for.”
Leroy D.,- Occupational Health & Safety Co-op
“Co-op has taught me a great deal about the health and safety field and allowed me to experience various sectors which I may not have the opportunity to do post graduation.”
Nayema R., - Occupational Health & Safety Co-op
“I wanted to apply to the co-op program, personally as an International Student, I thought it would be beneficial for me to gain professional experience in the Canadian job market. I wanted to gain technical and soft skills that I could confidently put on my resume, and elaborate in my cover letter. Co-op is also a great way to apply the skills that we have learnt in the classroom through our university courses in the real world, which is very empowering.
My co-op work terms have helped to pave my career path by equipping me with skills and experiences that I can use as a compass to guide me towards further experiences. Now, I have more confidence in the skills that I have, and a clearer picture of my own strengths and weaknesses that I can build upon. I think I also have a clearer picture of the industry I want to go into and the types of jobs I think I will enjoy based on my co-op work terms and my academic experiences.”
Sarick C.,- Biology Co-op
“I have gained several benefits through the TMU co-op program. For instance, through the co-op program, I was given the resources and opportunities to create a compelling application package, including my resume and cover letter, and develop strong interviewing skills. I was also able to gain relevant work experience even prior to graduation. Through my placement, I was able to apply the knowledge I’ve learned at TMU and strengthen key skills that would be an asset in the workplace while networking with industry professionals!”
Chiddhanya A., - Biomedical Sciences Co-op
“Co-op helps students gain valuable experiences and skills that they may apply in future career and academic endeavours. Through participating in Toronto Metropolitan’s Co-op program, I have gained a number of professional skills that I may not have developed otherwise.”
Monica M., - Biology Co-op
“Co-op helped pave the way for my Career Path because I understand how to properly hunt for jobs and I also know what skills and languages are sought after in the Computer Science industry. Also the connections I have made along the way have helped me tremendously and will no doubt be very useful once I graduate this spring. I definitely feel that it was worth extending my degree by one year in order to participate in Co-Op. I enjoyed all of my work experiences and I feel like I have a good understanding of where I want to end up when I graduate and start pursuing full-time positions.”
Alfred L. - Computer Science Co-op
“The benefits of being in the co-op program is that you can have a chance to try out different roles within the field that you study in school. Also being able to build up different connections with other peers at work is something that I think is an amazing benefit of being in the co-op program.”
Jiaying Z.,- Computer Science Co-op
“I have completed 4 co-op work terms and worked as an architectural intern at NEUF Architect(e)s. The co-op program played an important part in my future career development. Being in the co-op program allowed me to apply the knowledge and skills I learned from school to solve realistic problems in the industry. The process of applying for jobs through the Co-op program also allowed me to evaluate and improve my skill sets. During my work terms at NEUF Architect(e)s, I built a good relationship with the team and kept in touch with my former co-workers when I returned to school. When I asked if I could come back to work for the summer, the team was delighted to have me back. The guidance I received during my co-op work terms helped me learn about the process of becoming an architect and other career options from a professional’s perspective.”
Rita W., - Architectural Science Co-op
“There are several perks that make the Co-op program worth pursuing. Hands-on experience is the most standout advantage since the program allowed me to work temporarily in different industries and gain insight to pave my future career. Moreover, I also made a lot of professional connections that would benefit my post-graduation journey. Another significant feature is the co-op pay. I was able to cover my daily expenses and save up for my university tuition with the salary I earned as a co-op student. Having a chance to develop yourself in a working environment early is such an amazing experience. After each co-op term, my career path became clearer in terms of my favorite industries, responsibilities and how to achieve it. Nothing could compare to a hands-on experience as you could examine yourself through distinct tasks and ultimately, understand which environment you would prosper.”
Truong L., - Chemical Engineering Co-op
