How Co-op Works

Securing a co-op job is a competitive process. Co-op students are not "placed" but rather apply for positions as with any job search. Success in co-op requires commitment to the job search process to successfully secure your co-op placement. The co-op program does not guarantee you employment but equips you with the necessary tools to succeed, and we are here to help.

Looking to learn more? Here is how it all works:

One work term is 16 weeks of full-time (35-40 hours a week) paid work experience related to your program.

To receive your work term credits you need to complete a report for each approved work term.

To graduate, you must successfully complete three or four work terms, depending on the program.

To receive a work term credit you need a ‘Satisfactory’ or higher on your employer's evaluation of performance.

If you are an international student, please contact International Student Support if you have any questions about visa requirements related to co-op work placements.

Co-op students are expected to follow the work term schedule(s) for their program. Some programs allow you to change your work term sequence with the permission of your co-op faculty advisor. Depending on your schedule and preference, your work term can be extended to 8, 12 or 16 months of continuous employment. For more detailed information about work term schedules, see below.

For students in the co-op program, co-op fees are additional fees on top of your school tuition and incidental fees, which are calculated in accordance with the policies of Toronto Metropolitan University and of the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. The fees cover operational costs that support you with: student advising, programming, and resource development; the co-op recruitment process; infrastructure and administration; job development; and employer and student relationship management.

The total co-op fee is $3,500.00. Fees are paid in installments spread over the course of students' study at Toronto Metropolitan University to reduce your financial burden.

Co-op fees are participation fees and are not based on the number of work terms secured, nor when work terms are secured. Students who secure at least three co-op work terms (12 months total) are required to pay the full co-op fees according to your respective fee payment schedule. Note: Students who are successful in securing their work terms can more than offset their Co-op fees with their earnings.

Co-op students admitted prior to F2018 are advised to contact your Co-op Program Specialist regarding your fee payments.

Co-op fees and payments are non-refundable and subject to change without notice.

For wage information on Toronto Met's Business Co-op programs, please visit the Ted Rogers School of Management's Business Career Hub Co-op page (opens in new window) .

To receive a grade for your co-op work terms, you need to:

  • Work Term must be an approved job by the co-op team or a Faculty Advisor.
  • register for the appropriate work term course codes
  • where possible, participate in a work site visit with your Co-op Program Specialist
  • complete and submit work term report*
  • submit an Evaluation on Co-op Student Performance completed by your supervisor.

*Note: As a co-op student, you will complete a work term report for each co-op work term. The report facilitates reflection on your accomplishments at work, the challenges you experienced, and your future learning objectives. Please refer to your program for the timing of submission of work term reports as it allows your faculty advisor to grade your term and facilitate your growth.

Students that secure a work term through their own search, must submit an Employment Eligibility form for approval by the faculty advisor. The job should meet the following criteria:

  • paid work
  • full-time hours (35 - 40 hrs/week)
  • at least 12 consecutive weeks (16 weeks is the norm).
  • be relevant to the program of study

Toronto Met co-op uses a continuous hiring process where jobs are posted on a first-come, first-served basis until all positions are filled. There is no ranking or matching of students with employers. Job postings are specifically for co-op students and listed in a portal accessible only to co-op students.

Applying for co-op jobs is similar to a real-world hiring process with a few differences that allow for employers to be assured that the students they choose are committed to working with them, and for as many co-op students as possible to find work.

If you find your own employment, it must be approved by your faculty advisor prior to accepting the position. The student must submit an Employment Eligibility form for approval by the faculty advisor and the job should meet the following criteria:

  • paid work
  • full-time hours (35 - 40 hrs/week)
  • at least 12 consecutive weeks (16 weeks is the norm).
  • be relevant to the program of study

Note: the steps below may take 2 - 4 weeks depending on the employer.

 1. Advertisement 2. Application 3. Interviews 4. Selection

Job descriptions are submitted by employers via e-mail or the co-op Portal and posted for students to apply.

Student applications (cover letter, resume & grade report) are sent to employers to be pre-screened for interviews.

Employers review the applications and decide which students they would like to interview.

Typically, employers select students and notify the co-op staff. Then the co-op staff relays offers to the students.
