Hide tanning

The Hide Tanning Gallery will highlight community contributions to the art and science of hide tanning. The Gallery will include photos from the 2019 Hide Tanning Camp held here on campus, as well as several finished hides using a variety of techniques (including fish skin tanning).

SciXchange staff will share several tools and hides once a day, so community members can experience the touch and feel of these hides and tools.

This Gallery is the inaugural show of the POD Student Gallery space - a brand new space on campus to highlight and share student work with community members.

Join us Sept. 18 - 22 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm for an interactive session on hide tanning. Our volunteers will provide guided walks through the gallery and a select number of hides and tools will be available for you to touch and see. These Open House sessions will only take place during the first week of the gallery. Please note that the Gallery will be open from 10:00am to 4:00pm each weekday for self-directed viewing.

The gallery show is part of Science Literacy Week and Indigenous Education Week at TMU. The gallery was curated by the Indigenous Knowledge and Science Outreach Coordinator at SciXchange, Caleb Wesley.

As a precaution, the hides will be protected while on display. Tools and hides will be available to touch Sept. 18 - 22, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Should a member of the community (especially the Indigenous Community) wish to access these hides outside of our public showing, please contact our office to arrange a time, during the exhibit timeframe: scixchange@torontomu.ca (opens in new window)  or 416-979-5000 x. 553134

Please reach out to our office at  scixchange@torontomu.ca (opens in new window)  to request any accessibility accommodations you may need at the gallery.
