Our Guide to Greening Your Pride
Every year, SciXchange is thrilled to take part in celebrating Pride Month, and taking part in Ryerson's #DisplayYourPride decorating competition. This year, Ryerson introduced a new award, "Most Environmentally Sustainable." Since environmental sustainability is one of SciXchange's key outreach and communication themes, of course it was made a priority for this year's decor!
We accomplished an environmentally friendly Pride display in two ways:
1. We used only sustainable materials. This included anything that is recyclable or compostable, as well as brought in items from home to repurpose them as part of our display. We did this to show that any part of a Pride celebration can be made envrionmentally friendly when you focus on using sustainable alternatives instead of traditional decorations.
2. We centralized our theme around how everyone can make their own Pride celebrations as green as possible. This included displays showing the cleanest commute to downtown Toronto for the Pride Parade, visiting thrift stores to purchase clothing items for celebratory outfits instead of buying brand new, and using decor alternatives such as pasta noodles for DIY streamers.
Along with this, we prepared a Guide to Greening Your Pride that provides readers the details about our display, and how to make their own Pride environmentally friendly. We opted for only a digital copy online to avoid using paper.
Of course, our SciXchange team put a lot of scientific thought into everything, including developing biodegradable dyes, preparing our rainbow teas, setting up our prism rainbow photo booth, designing a waste sorting game, and more!
