A day in the life of a 4th year Fashion student

9 AM: Start of my day

I usually wake up around 8 AM. But coming from the Fashion program, all nighters are my best friend. With a lot of busy days, it can be difficult to maintain a balanced sleep schedule. Regardless, I get ready for my classes and head out to grab a coffee/drink before class.

11 AM: Drink of the day

Whenever my day is light in terms of school work, or I’m feeling a little fancy, I usually go to Matcha Matcha, only a block away from campus. I usually grab a Cheesecake Matcha, which is by far the best Matcha drink I have ever tried! Then I head to my Fashion Lounge which is located at Kerr Hall; it’s a pretty safe and comfortable space for Fashion students with a microwave, some Fashion books, some hangers (for garment assignments) and other stationery items for daily use!

12 PM: Time for class

I have always preferred some other techniques besides sewing or patternmaking garments, and that’s when I discovered Draping, where you get to make different shapes out of fabrics by pinning them! It has been a common technique when it comes to traditional garments or evening wear, which is why I genuinely enjoy FFD 610: Draping II. I love to learn more advanced techniques in draping. The garment I’m currently working on is from last semester and I’m trying to find new ways to modify it and make it look more wearable and comfortable, while applying the new concepts and advanced draping techniques I learn in this course.

This class teaches us how to design a garment with minimal sewing and how to make extraordinary evening-wear silhouettes through draping! The assignments are all related to one topic that we get to choose at the beginning of the semester. I started with a few sketches of my initial designs and by the end of the semester, I’ll get to make the dress I designed as my final assignment! My theme was horses, since we are officially in the year of the horse, and it’s my favourite animal. I wanted to represent the strength of a horse through a garment. I’m still working on the final that’s due at the end of this semester.

3 PM: Lunch time!

After class, I often go to Basil Box on Yonge Street to have some Thai food for lunch. Thai food is my favourite cuisine, and I really enjoy it in the city (or anywhere else). My top favourite Thai food place in Toronto has to be Pai!

4 PM: Clocking in!

After finishing my lunch, I get to work at (without any bias) my favourite spot on campus, The Met Campus Pub (external link) , where I currently work as a Server. This job has introduced me to some of my closest friends and the best people I’ve met on campus since my first year. I always have so much fun working here and meeting fellow students! Recently, there have been so many exchange student groups (mostly from Europe) coming in for drinks and I love interacting and having fun conversations with them.

10 PM: Some more work!

After work, I check on some updates from the social media posts, and how the posters are being made for the Fashion Course Union (external link)  (@fsnunion) where I currently have the role of VP of Creative. I love being a part of this union since I get to develop my leadership skills and be creative alongside a team of fashion students. Some of this creativity involves hosting and organizing events and workshops, such as doll making, which can support fellow fashion students to gain experience and the required workshop credits necessary to graduate. Being VP of Creative for the Fashion Course Union also benefits me as it provides the internship hours I require as I approach graduation.

10:30 PM: Dinner date!

I make sure to take some time out and spend it with my loved ones. It was so exciting to have a dinner date after so long with my partner at Cherry’s High Dive! It is also very rare for me to explore new restaurants in Toronto when I’m navigating assignment due dates and an unbalanced sleep schedule, but whenever I get to do it, I always make sure to enjoy it to the fullest. This restaurant also has a fun photobooth!

11:30 PM: Calling it a night!

I headed home after dinner and went straight into my bed to catch up on sleep and keep up with my busy schedule. It was a long yet a productive day!

I hope you all enjoyed having a peek in my day as a Fashion student at TMU!

Until next time,
Disha.
