A day in the life of a 4th year Marketing student

It seems surreal but I am finally in my fourth and final year of my program. The air on campus feels different this time around, as I try to soak in the excitement of a new school year for one final time. While I experience bittersweet emotions, I also have a busy schedule that requires me to manage my time intentionally and spend this last chapter the best way I can.

Curious to know more? Here’s what a day in my life looks like this Fall semester as a final year Marketing student at TMU’s Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM):

8:30 AM: Commute to campus

I live downtown, so luckily my commute to campus is short. I usually grab a protein bar or an apple before I head out the door, and take the streetcar to Union Station.

9 AM: Career Boost shift on campus

Once a week, I meet my Career Boost team on campus. I work as a Content and Communications assistant for the Marketing and Communications team at International Student Enrolment, Education and Inclusion. This role involves a lot of fun projects, combining some of my favorite elements of marketing, such as content and copywriting, email design and SEO analytics.

12 PM: AwardSpring info session on campus

Since it’s awards season, I am working on my applications whenever I get a chance. I had a couple questions about some application criteria and wanted someone to read over my personal statements to see if there is anything I can improve on, so I decided to attend an info session in TRSM.

1 PM: MKT 702 Lecture

It’s time to head to my MKT 702: Advanced Marketing Management lecture on Algorithmic Capitalism. This week, we read about the idea of “hyper-relevance” that digital marketers use to target consumers, and the ethical implications that creates. After semesters of learning crucial marketing theories, this class offers a critical look at how these theories are put to use in real world scenarios. It challenges us to think outside the box and look for creative solutions that do not rely on exploitative methods of marketing.

4 PM: Grab a quick snack

After class, I finish up some of my tasks for my Career Boost job for the day at a nearby cafe. My current favourite is Cong Caphe, right by the Sheldon & Tracy Levy Student Learning Centre (SLC). I got my favourite order—a lemongrass chicken banh mi and a peanut butter coffee. After doing some damage to my wallet, I sat down to finish some tasks before logging off for the day.

5 PM: RAC Class: Yin Yoga and Meditation

In the evenings, I try to go to a group fitness class at the Recreation & Athletics Centre (RAC)

Fun fact: this gym facility is completely underground, located right beneath the grassy quad at the centre of our campus! This week, I went to a Yoga class where the instructor had us do some basic stretches and meditation practices. With calm background music and positive affirmations, this class is my favourite way to ease some stress that comes during busy days!

I took a moment to appreciate the fall views as I headed to the RAC:

6 PM: CRI 300 Lecture + Lab

It is time for another class I am really loving this semester. I am taking CRI 300: Digital Design Studio as part of my minor in Communication Design. Initially, I was concerned about taking this course because I have no prior design experience. But student-favourite Professor Dwight Alexander (external link)  reassured me in the first week that his classroom is the right place for novice designers. I love this class because it is geared towards helping us all build a portfolio that is industry-ready. Our professor’s goal is to make us think in decades, not semesters!

9 PM: Time to head home!

After a long day, it’s finally time to head home. Before taking the subway, I picked up a copy of the independent student newspaper The Eyeopener (external link)  since my work was featured in this month’s issue. As a writer, I feel so much joy seeing my name in print!

Today was one of my busiest days of the week, which meant that I crashed into my bed as soon as I was home. I hope you enjoyed coming along this journey with me, and seeing what the life of a 4th year Marketing student looks like. Stay tuned to learn about the day in the life of students across faculties!
