My scholarship story

Hello! My name is Micaela Pantoja. I was born and raised in Lima, Peru, and I am a third-year International Economics and Finance student at TMU. As a recipient of one of TMU’s $5,000 CAD International Student Merit Scholarships, I’m sharing my story of why I applied and some advice about writing a competitive application!

I applied for a Scholarship because I wanted to help my parents with my university costs. Before applying, I had concerns about whether my achievements would stand out. To overcome these fears, I focused on showcasing not just my academic record but also my unique qualities and experiences.

The application process itself was straightforward. I wrote a 500-word personal statement that showcased my character and extracurricular activities. I showed passion for international economics which helped me build a compelling scholarship application, but I also highlighted extracurriculars such as leadership in sports and volunteer activities that helped my community, school, and fellow students. I sought guidance from mentors and revised my application multiple times to ensure it effectively conveyed my story.

When I found out I received the scholarship, I felt a mix of relief, gratitude, and excitement!  This was a validation of my hard work and dedication, and it alleviated some of the financial pressures associated with my education. Knowing that I could contribute to my university costs was a significant relief for both me and my family.

Here’s my advice to you if you’re working on an entrance scholarship application:

  1. Thoroughly research the scholarship requirements and tailor your application to showcase your achievements, goals, and how the scholarship aligns with your aspirations.
  2. It's essential to highlight not only your academic achievements but also your extracurricular activities and personal qualities.
  3. Craft a compelling personal statement that reflects your passion and commitment, as well as the impact the scholarship will have on your education.
  4. Proofread your application to ensure clarity and correctness.

I have lived up to TMU’s faith in me by contributing back to the TMU community! As a TMU student, I am the founder and president of TMU Women in Finance (external link) , a team lead of the Ted Rogers Sales & Trading Club (external link)  and a senior analyst of Investa Insights, an intercollegiate investment club with 11 chapters at leading Canadian business universities.

My decision to join TMU has also been rewarded with unique Co-op opportunities. In my professional journey, last summer I was immersed in the dynamic world of payment processing at Moneris as an Enterprise Risk Management Co-op Analyst and this upcoming summer I will embark on a new adventure as a Global Markets Summer Associate at TD Securities.

In the end, the Awards Committees are looking for students who have genuine passions and interests, and evaluating the ways in which these students can contribute to the TMU community.

I truly hope this helps in reducing your stress. Wishing you the best of luck on your entrance scholarship applications! I’m confident your unique talents and accomplishments will stand out. Show off your passion and potential, and may success accompany you on this exciting academic journey. Best of luck—you got this!
