JOINT STATEMENT

The University Administration and the Toronto Metropolitan Faculty Association met at the Ontario Labour Relations Board to address an unfair labour practice complaint under section 96 of the Labour Relations Act and a companion grievance filed by the Association alleging that the University Administration had interfered in the Association’s representation rights.

The parties discussed the unique and special role of Association representatives under the Ontario Labour Relations Act and their rights to vigorously represent and defend the membership. While the parties have their differences, the University Administration respects and appreciates this representative role and the work undertaken in this regard by the Association Executive and the Association Staff.

The University Administration recognizes the right of the Association to represent its members and to defend and assert its members’ rights. It also confirms that employees of the Association are the responsibility of the Association and are not employees of the University directly subject to the policies of the University.

The Parties are pleased to have resolved these matters and to move forward together, recognizing and understanding that there will be moments of frustration in Association-Employer relations and recognizing and understanding the importance of vigorous Association representation.
