About the book

Women Changing Architecture highlights the pivotal role women have played in transforming contemporary architecture in Canada. Through the works and careers of thirty-two architects from Quebec and Ontario, this publication showcases engaged practices that, for over four decades, have helped redefine the discipline, its values, and its modes of action.

This publication stems from an exhibition originally presented at TMU (Toronto Metropolitan University) in the fall of 2024, and UQAM Design Centre in the spring of 2025. Titled Women Changing Architecture, it brings together the work of sixteen women from Ontario and sixteen from Quebec.

Far from being a mere generational overview, this publication reflects the diversity of approaches, scales, and issues addressed by these architects. Whether institutional, cultural, residential, or urban projects, their work explores the relationships between architecture, society, and the built environment, and responds with rigor and inventiveness to contemporary environmental, social, and cultural challenges. By highlighting these individual and collective trajectories, Women Changing Architecture invites us to recognize the fundamental contribution of women to the recent history of architecture and to reflect on the future of a discipline in constant transformation, shaped by practices that are attentive, critical, and deeply rooted in their environment.
