Congratulations to Toronto Metropolitan University professor Ahmed Shaker on being elected Secretary General of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS). In this role, Shaker will serve as a member of the ISPRS Council, the Society's executive governing body, from 2026–2030. This appointment also marks a personal milestone for Shaker, as he’s the first Canadian of African and Arab origin to serve in the role.

The election follows the highly successful ISPRS 2026 Congress in Toronto – the first time in 54 years that a Canadian city hosted the event. In his past role as Deputy Congress Director, Shaker played an instrumental role in organizing the internationally attended event. The Congress provided TMU an opportunity to showcase its homegrown research, programs and partnerships in the geospatial field. As the interim Associate Dean of Research and External Partnerships at TMU’s Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, Shaker plans to further strengthen TMU’s international collaborations and research through the ISPRS community.

“I look forward to leveraging my new role to further enhance TMU's international profile and create new opportunities for research collaboration, student engagement, and strategic partnerships worldwide."
