About
The Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching is working with the Indigenous Education and Treaties Recognition Week Organizing Committee to host a Teaching Treaties Roundtable during Treaties Recognition Week. Treaty education is a commitment which aims to teach students and the public more broadly about the living agreements that continue to shape relationships between Indigenous Peoples and settlers today. Treaty Recognition Week was brought forward at TMU through the work of the Indigenous Education Council.
Featured faculty include:
- Jennifer Orange, Interim Associate Dean, Academic, Lincoln Alexander School of Law
- Samantha Craig, Acting Assistant Professor, Lincoln Alexander School of Law
- Kathryn Underwood, Professor, School of Early Childhood Studies
- Nicole Ineese-Nash, School of Early Childhood Studies.
Through dialogue, the roundtable participants will share their journeys of bringing treaty education, treaty recognition and the TRC calls to action to their teaching. Drawing from Margaret Kovacs (2012), the conversation will explore such questions as: what does the treaty relationship, as understood by Indigenous people, offer toward our learners? And, how do we create conditions for respectful and relational learning, even as we navigate the tensions and contradictions that arise from our positions as Indigenous and settler faculty?
Participants will come away with strategies to support similar efforts in their own teaching.
