International Financial Aid
International Financial Aid
While you may not qualify for Canadian student loans, you may be eligible for other financial aid options. Start your search for resources early!
As an international student attending Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), you may need some financial assistance. We encourage you to explore a range of resources to help cover the costs of your studies. These resources may include funding from your home country, private loans, scholarships, awards and part-time work.
We recommend reviewing your options early and throughout your time at TMU to ensure your education remains funded. And remember, if you have any questions about financial support for international students, immigration support, etc., please contact International Student Support or book an appointment with an international student advisor.
Since international students studying on a study permit are generally not eligible for Canadian government student assistance programs like the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), a good place to start looking for financial aid is with your home country’s government. There may be student loans, grants, sponsorships, third-party financial organizations or other education funding available.
Exceptions: Students who are protected persons or convention refugees may be eligible for Canadian government financial aid programs.
Our TMU Student Financial Assistance office may be able to help with documents related to your funding application from your home country’s student aid office or from a third-party financial organization. For example, we can help with confirming your program information or supporting the release of your approved funding.
If you need help with completing your forms, please email them as fillable PDFs to funding@torontomu.ca with the subject line Student Financial Assistance - Government Student Aid for Out-of-Province and International Students. Please use your TMU email address and include:
- Your TMU Student Number
- Name of the funding provider
- Brief explanation of what you need completed
Another opportunity you can explore is private education loans offered by Canadian or international financial institutions. TMU can't recommend or endorse a specific private lender or external funding organization.
Please keep in mind that if you choose to explore private loans, you're responsible for reviewing the lender’s eligibility, requirements and contractual terms before applying.
For details on when to begin repayment and for processes, please connect directly with your government or private lenders.
If you're a student from the U.S. looking to start loan repayment, please refer to the U.S. Loans Resources and Policies page.
We want to support you as best we can, so, in addition to the resources listed above, you may be eligible for financial aid options available through TMU. To learn more about tuition, fees, scholarships, awards and work opportunities at TMU, visit TMU Global - Paying for Your Education.
You're strongly encouraged to begin financial planning early and review available resources before and throughout your academic journey at TMU.
