Major Research Paper

In 2022, LGBTQ2+ people still face intolerance – whether that be at home, work, school, or public spaces. Finding safe spaces can be difficult for the queer community, but Gaze wants to change that. The goal of the Gaze app is to help LGBTQ2+ communities find safe and inclusive spaces in Toronto. Gaze focuses on identifying, promoting and providing navigation to safe and inclusive spaces catered to Toronto’s LGBTQ+ communities. These spaces include LGBTQ+ inclusive businesses, events, and organizations that are year-round advocates that push their support towards equity, diversity, accessibility, and inclusion. The idea behind the app is to help relieve the emotionally taxing and exhausting experience many experience when they feel the need to behave differently in unpredictable or potentially unaccepting situations and settings. Gaze will be a free to use transdisciplinary mobile application designed to serve as a digital directory to find such spaces (businesses, organizations, events, etc.) as well as encourage physical movement and exploration through the city.

Biography

During Tyra’s undergraduate degree, she pushed herself to build a career in the music industry. While graduating during the start of a global pandemic, she realized that getting a job was going to be impossible. So, she decided to continue her studies and dive into something she always wanted to try, but was too afraid to.

Digital Media and Design had always struck her interest, and now she is finally doing it!

During her academic journey she has shown interest in using digital platforms to create positive change. With having all the resources and technology at our fingertips, she believes that more can be done to better our realities, rather than using technology and media to escape it.

Why Digital Media?

Digital Media can change the world. We interact with the media everyday, so I believe it has the power to change lives. Our current digital world provides us with endless possibilities that also have the power to influence people. I want to use the skills I gain in this program to create positive change. I am passionate about improving, learning and growing. I want to be a resource that can lift people up. It is such a privilege to be in this position, so I want to push myself to innovate and create projects, and products that are backed by compassion for the greater good.
