This study explores the use of adaptive gamification as a design technique for engendering motivation, sustaining optimal engagement, and enhancing the experience of interactive learning systems. While many gamification design frameworks exist, there is yet to be a universally accepted model or a formalized design process that is scalable across diverging domains. Furthermore, the impact of its use on influencing the behavior and attitude of students is highly dependent on the type of motivation that drives them to use these applications (Buckley & Doyle, 2016). It is critical to distinguish the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in a nuanced manner when designing applications aimed at targeting its properties. To address multidisciplinary design problems, this study applies an interdisciplinary solution through the strategic integration of three design practices. A conceptual model is proposed for designing systems that engender motivation through a continuum between extrinsic and intrinsic drivers. This model presents the interplay of two core features: (1) the personalization of motivational affordances to individual user types, and (2) the persuasive design of systems to enable and facilitate task performance. The artifact of this study is an interactive learning platform delivered through an adaptive gamified experience.

Biography

Graduated from Ryerson University’s Creative Industries program, Samantha is equipped with the interdisciplinary skills to approach situations with both a strategic and creative problem solving acumen. Throughout her studies she has gained a foundational understanding of UX research and strategy techniques, best practices of user interface design, and principles of architecting information in regards to digital products. With industry exposure in academic and corporate settings she has honed practical skills in digital analytics, project management, design thinking, and high-fidelity prototyping.

Samantha is a lifelong learner with a passion for leveraging aggregated data to deliver micro-personalized experiences, user experience designing, and harnessing emerging trends in digital media to guide growth based strategies. She aspires to innovate for future generations and to push the boundaries of personal and social possibilities by crafting digital media systems that enable users to live a better quality of life.
