Major Research Paper

Mystery in single-player, 2D video games is a potent method to generate emotionality in players. As a solo game developer, I have created a research program centred around art style as to inform decisions I make for my larger game. This long-decayed world suspiciously teems with mechanical, hostile life. In every blade of grass, in every crumbling edifice, the mysteries of an empire within the forest hang tantalizingly out-of-reach.

Biography

Oliver is an interdisciplinary designer with a passion for detail. He creates cohesive, digital worlds through graphical and musical art, woven together via story. He’s fascinated by the emotional scapes produced at the juncture of these elements and seeks to create powerful and lasting digital experiences.

Oliver’s early inspirations included the disassembling of old electronic equipment to discover their functions. This activity blossomed into a love for not only technology, but the creation of art using technology. While at the University of Toronto, Oliver studied the emotional, visual, and aural contrasts necessary for us to relate to media. He believes that some of the greatest experiences arise from a fusion of deep and dark story along with entertaining arcade-esque play.

Oliver is currently working on a 2D action-adventure video game centred around mystery and allusion. The game’s release is pencilled-in for 2025.

Why Digital Media?

Our digital world provides us with unprecedented methods of creation. Worlds we create may be designed with their own structure and rules, and allow for not only storytelling, but advanced immersion in that world. Digitality affords us the ability to create “symphonies for the senses” and to experiment with fusions of art spanning multiple disciplines. Through digital media, the expression of story can be elevated to the realm of experience. My goal as a designer and artist is to actively push our boundaries of experience forward.
