We hear so much about digital media fandoms. But what about the professionals who produce digital content: do they engage with their audiences, and how far does this engagement go? Through industry interviews and case studies, I explore the changing landscape of creator-fan engagement in the animation and video game fields. My study shows that while engagement with fans is hard wired into the gaming industry in a way not seen for animated television series, in gaming too there are real practical and artistic limits to how far creators can listen to fan opinions.

Biography

Nathalie is a Swiss/Canadian story designer and animator with a strong interest in transmedia storyworlds and creating bridging narratives across different platforms (graphic comics, podcasts, video games, film, social media). They bring artistic creativity to this work along with an openness to commercial prospects and a readiness and talent for creative collaboration. They have worked for Keen, a UK-based charity, and Mave Social, a boutique social media company.

In their spare time, Nathalie is likely either chipping away at their multi-volume graphic novel project, “Last Stop: Neverwhere,” taking part in a game of Dungeons and Dragon, or out for a walk. They love listening to Podcasts, notably D&D ones such as Dimension 20 or Critical Roll, and are often found listening to these while cooking or travelling to meet up with a friend.

Why Digital Media?

I chose Ryerson’s Masters of Digital Media program for how it brings together people with different digital strengths as well as backgrounds and experiences. This kind of community can only enhance everyone’s learning journeys. My goal for the program is to understand audience engagement on digital platforms, and especially how to encourage participatory story-making among fandoms.
