This project seeks to understand how public interest news outlets can leverage subject matter archives to create artificial intelligence-based chatbots to help meet the information needs of audiences. With a focus on their application in explanatory journalism, this project will create an open-source chatbot prototype with functionality informed by a study of newsroom and audience needs. 

Online Deliberation

This project explores automated methods to measure online deliberation by analyzing commentary surrounding complex social issues. By employing a combination of analytic calculations alongside linguistic and machine learning-based tools we are assessing the quality of online deliberation using common measures of deliberation including rationality, interactivity, equality, civility and cognitive complexity. In addition to developing an automated online deliberation measurement framework, this work analyzes the deliberative characteristics of the Twitter and Reddit social media platforms.
