Angelique Sanders RECE, BA
Angélique Sanders is a dedicated Registered Early Childhood Educator and a 1990 graduate of the Toronto Metropolitan University School of Early Childhood Studies (ECS) program. She also completed the Toronto Metropolitan University Family Life Education Certificate in 1996. Angélique has over 30 years of experience at the Toronto Metropolitan University Early Learning Centre laboratory school with various curriculum frameworks such as High/Scope, multiage, inquiry and project-based.
Angélique is fluent in Dutch and English and her passion for languages is at the heart of her educational practice. She celebrates and nurtures children’s home languages, their bilingualism and strives to support the unique language needs of children, families, student educators, colleagues, and visitors. Angélique’s enthusiasm for supporting multilingualism led to collaborating with Associate Professor Roma Chumak-Horbatsch on implementing Linguistically Appropriate Practice (LAP) at a school and child care centres across the city of Toronto. She has presented about LAP to the early years community locally, nationally and internationally, and continues to facilitate workshops for Toronto Metropolitan University ECS students. In 2013, Angélique was the recipient of the Canadian Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Early Childhood Education for her outstanding work with Linguistically Appropriate Practice. She is also a contributor to Dr. Chumak-Horbatsch’s book Using Linguistically Appropriate Practice: A Guide for Teaching in Multilingual Classrooms (2019).
Angélique is an advocate who respects everyone’s voice and abilities as she strives for inclusion for all. She channels her creative expressions in the learning environment through drumming, music exploration and creative movement and yoga. Look out for some broom dancing!
