Canada Learning Bond (CLB)

The Student Financial Assistance office has created a high-level summary of the recently announced Canada Learning Bond (CLB).

Note: The CLB does not need to be reported when applying for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP).

What is it?

The Canada Learning Bond (CLB) is money that the Government adds to a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for children from low-income families. This money helps to pay the costs of a child’s full-time or part-time studies after high school at the following:

  • Apprenticeship programs
  • CEGEPs
  • Trade schools
  • Colleges
  • Universities

Personal contributions to a RESP are NOT required to receive the CLB.

To be considered for CLB, you need to do the following:

  1. Gather personal information.
  2. Contact a participating RESP promoter to open an RESP.
  3. Check that the CLB is deposited in the RESP.
