HEATHER MCGEER

Emerging Graduate Researcher

Heather McGeer is a student in the Master of Professional Communication at Toronto Met University. With interests in political communication, cultural studies, and theories of discourse and power, her master's research focuses on discourses of diversity and inclusion in local government communication, specific to rural communities in Ontario. Heather brings an interdisciplinary background of academic experience to the project. She holds a BA in English and Business from the University of Guelph, and completed an academic exchange at Griffith University in 2018.

As a research assistant for the Explanatory Journalism Impact and Uptake (XJO) project, Heather is working with Dr. Shiga to investigate the communication of COVID-19 transmission risks to understand how Conversation contributors are translating scientific knowledge, with comparison to other journalistic styles.
