This week, 2022 Production + Design graduate Allison Kinahan was awarded a prestigious Global Undergraduate Award (external link)  as the Global Winner in the Music, Film & Theatre division. Allison wrote her award winning essay ‘Performance in Confinement: Icebound Theatricals as a Means of Survival’ as her capstone project in the THP 800 class.

The Global Undergraduate Awards is the world’s leading undergraduate awards programme which recognises top undergraduate work, shares this work with a global audience and connects students across cultures and disciplines.

Allison applied for the award this spring, knowing that if she won she would have a chance at a free trip to Dublin, Ireland, where the awards ceremony takes place. Her work was assessed anonymously by a panel of industry professionals and academics worldwide.

Now, Allison is pursuing a master’s degree in history at the University of Toronto where she is focusing her research on instances of theatre in Second World War concentration camps. She’s looking forward to continuously exploring examples of theatre and performance in times of crisis, war, or confinement.

Performance extends a heartfelt and joyous congratulations to Allison and we can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next!

My time in the Performance program was a great help! The paper I won the award with was for my Independent Study Project, so not only was that final year class a real help, but the second year research methods class also really gave me a better understanding of how to undertake a project like this. The paper is kind of a mix of theatre and history, so my background within the program helped me to understand some of the more technical aspects of the research.
