French Pathway

Once you have taken the Placement Test, you will know your language proficiency level. Your first course is the one listed for your score in the Score Guide. Students can then progress through the levels as listed below.

It is not possible to go backwards on the pathway to courses of lower difficulty. 

Prerequisites vary and are listed in the Undergraduate Calendar. 

 

INTRODUCTORY LEVEL

  • FRE 101: Introductory French I

  • FRE 201: Introductory French II  

 

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

  • FRE 301: Intermediate French I
  • FRE 302: French Food, Wine and Hospitality
  • FRE 303: French and Fashion

ADVANCED LEVEL

  • FRE 501: Speaking and Writing French I*

                         ⬇︎
  • FRE 601: Speaking and Writing French II 

    *Students who complete FRE 501 with a B+ or higher may advance to any course in the Thematic Level that lists FRE 601 as a prerequisite. You may do this concurrently with FRE 601 or skip FRE 601 altogether. For assistance with this, contact the Undergraduate Program Administrators for the department at lirundergrad@torontomu.ca.

 

THEMATIC LEVEL

Most courses at this level can be taken in any order - check prerequisites in the Undergraduate calendar. 

  • FRE 503: Middle Ages to Classicism; FRE 603: Enlightenment to La Belle Époque
  • FRE 504: French Audiovisual Translation
  • FRE 505: French Language and Culture; FRE 605: Francophone Language and Culture  
  • FRE 608: Contemporary French Literature
  • FRE 609: Franco-Canadian Literature 
  • FRE 510: Effective Writing ; FRE 610: Cultural Context of Writing
  • FRE 515: Introduction to Business French (Not available to native French speakers); FRE 502: Communication and Business French; FRE 602: Business French in Practice **Students are strongly advised to complete FRE 515 before completing either FRE 502 or FRE 602. Students who have completed FRE 502 and/or FRE 602 cannot take FRE 515.
  • FRE 604: French for Healthcare
  • FRE 701: French for Today; FRE 801: French and New Media  
  • FRE 702: French Gastronomy and Culture
  • FRE 704: Franco-Canadian Culture
  • FRE 706: The Life and Times of the French Language  
  • FRE 707: Introduction to French-English Translation; FRE 507: English-French Translation I; FRE 607: English-French Translation II
