Spend a day with me during Reading Week
Hey! I’m Juliette, a Professional Communication student at Toronto Metropolitan University. I’m an international student from Paris, which basically means I traded croissants for iced coffee and now use “eh” unironically.
When I’m not buried in assignments, you’ll find me listening to music, designing random things that may or may not ever get finished, or finding new cafés to study (and people watch) in. I love the buzz of downtown Toronto—it’s chaotic in the best way and it keeps life interesting.
This was a day in my life during Reading Week, which happens in the middle of the semester and gives us a break from classes so we can study for midterms. It might sound relaxing but it actually means I have three midterms and a very committed relationship with Google Docs!
8 AM: A slow morning
My morning started slowly, with breakfast and coffee to set the tone for the day. I made a nice sandwich and took a few quiet minutes to plan what I wanted to focus on. Preparing a good breakfast feels like a small act of care before diving into study mode.
This week I am focusing on my elective courses - a Sociology class (SOC105) and a Fashion class (FSN105). I started by setting small, achievable goals for the day. Creating structure early helps me stay on track and feel ready to take on midterm prep.
10:30 AM: Study session at a café
I headed to Sam James Coffee Bar on Queen West to be more productive. I ordered an iced coffee and found a seat by the window to enjoy the sunshine. The atmosphere and friendly energy here make this one of my favourite cafés to get some work done and focus in.
12 PM: Study session on campus
After my morning at the coffee shop, I headed to campus for another study session with friends from my program at the ProCom Lounge; Professional Communication’s own student study space at the Rogers Communication Centre (RCC). It’s a comfortable space to collaborate in, share ideas, and help each other through assignments. I also love spending time at the Student Learning Centre (SLC) on other days.
3 PM: A quick walk to recharge
After studying, my friends and I went for a walk around campus to get some fresh air. We grabbed coffee from Balzac’s and went for a walk by the Quad and Lake Devo.
5 PM: Dinner at Chinatown
My friends and I then went to Hot Hot Rice in Chinatown Market for dinner. We ordered our usual meals (rice and a couple of different meats to share), talked about our classes, and caught up after a busy day. Once we finished eating, we all headed back home to rest and prepare for the next day.
9 PM: Time to call it a day
Once I got home, I reviewed my notes briefly and organized my tasks for the next day. It had been a productive and busy day, balancing studying, group work, and time with friends. After finishing up, I prepared for bed and made sure I was ready for the next morning.
