Dr. Gaëlle Morel is an art historian and the Exhibitions Curator at the Image Centre, Toronto (Canada). She received her PhD in the History of Contemporary Art from Université Paris 1 – Panthéon-Sorbonne (France). Her research deals with the figure of the artist as author in French contemporary photography and the artistic and cultural recognition of the medium in France and in the United States. Recently, she edited the exhibition catalogue True to the Eyes. The Howard and Carole Tanenbaum Photography Collection, (Munich: Hirmer Verlag, 2019) and co-authored, with Thierry Gervais, The Making of Visual News: A History of Photography in the Press (London: Bloomsbury, 2017). In 2009, Morel was the guest curator of the photography biennial Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal (Quebec) and the editor of the accompanying catalogue The Spaces of the Image, (Montreal: Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal, 2009). She has taught at university level both in France and in Canada and is currently an instructor in the Film + Photography Preservation and Collections Management graduate program at Toronto Metropolitan University.
