Your application is a chance to really shine! A well-written statement can make all the difference so review the requirements carefully and keep these tips at hand.

Top tips: prepare your written statement

Write, revise and edit. Ensure your statement is clear and concise and meets the word count requirements.

Share specific examples. Use measurable outcomes and specific details to highlight accomplishments.

Highlight YOU. Outline experiences or achievements that showcase who you are and what makes you unique.

Avoid reusing written statements. Tailor your statement specifically to each award.

Consider booking an appointment with the FCS Academic Support Center or SLLS Writing Supports to meet with a peer facilitator to review your writing and provide feedback.

How to request reference letters (if applicable)

  • Identify your referee. Your referee should be someone who can speak to who you are, your accomplishments and experiences.
  • Connect with your referee. Although AwardSpring will prompt you to request a reference letter, it’s important to reach out to your referee beforehand to ensure they are aware of the upcoming request.
  • Inform your referee. Share details about the awards with the referee and key topics or experiences you have highlighted including award name, description, requirements and deadline to submit reference letter.
  • Thank your referee.
