When you next visit the George Vari Engineering and Computing Centre, you’ll find a new statue standing proudly in the hallway. The statue, featuring a stylized steel ring atop a polished concrete base, was designed to commemorate the longstanding Iron Ring ceremony in the engineering community. While the statue itself is a feat, how it came to be is equally as impressive.

Every component of the statue was designed, prototyped, tested, casted and installed by Toronto Metropolitan University’s engineering community. Developed over 18 months, the statue’s creation was led by six undergraduate students who were inspired to memorialize the ingenuity and social responsibility that the Iron Ring represents. The momentous effort united TMU students, alumni, technical staff, faculty members, and design teams – with each person sharing their unique skills and perspectives. Through numerous late nights and iterations, the collective produced a lasting monument that will connect TMU engineers throughout time.

“I am moved by the unity shown by our students, staff and faculty in the creation of the statue. By embracing different perspectives and navigating the unknown, their work exemplifies the very values embodied by the Iron Ring. This statue will serve as an everlasting visual reminder of the ethical obligations we, as engineers, stand for.”
