Admissions for Nutrition Communication (MHSc)

This program requires individuals to undertake practicums in hospitals and as a condition to undertaking those placements at the hospital, students are required to have received a number of vaccinations (including COVID-19) and vulnerable sector screening, etc.

Diverse opportunities for learning, practice and research — together with a strong Toronto Metropolitan University community — equip you with the knowledge and experiences needed to provide nutritional care and counselling, knowledge translation, program planning and policy development in a variety of settings. Exposure to new and burgeoning areas of dietetic practice prepare you to provide professional leadership in the field.

To be considered for admission to Toronto Metropolitan University’s Master of Health Science (MHSc) in Nutrition Communication, you must meet the minimum program requirements.

  • If you completed your education outside of Canada please see The College of Dietitians of Ontario Internationally Educated applicants (external link) .
  • You can apply for an admission cycle if you submit with your package proof that you have passed the Knowledge and Competency Assessment Tool (KCAT) (external link)  with Level 1 (in place of the Confirmation of Completion form) or proof of registration for the next available KCAT exam. If you receive an offer of admission, it will be conditional on achieving a Level 1 result in the KCAT.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are required for program entry and success.
  • If you graduated from an accredited Canadian undergraduate program or ACEND accredited program more than three years ago (from convocation date to application deadline), you must contact the College of Dietitians of Ontario to complete the Knowledge and Competence Assessment Tool (external link)  (KCAT). An applicant is deemed to have academic currency if they have an accredited undergraduate degree in nutrition and obtained a Level I result.

 We have a holistic review process, understanding that inequities can impact academic performance. If you've faced challenges that affected your GPA, you can apply, even if you don't meet our minimum grade requirement. You have the option to explain these circumstances in your Statement of Interest Letter, emphasing your full potential and contribution for graduate studies. 

 Please note that this program is open to qualified applicants who wish to become registered dietitians. It is not open to individuals who are or have been dietitians in Canada.

Option 2:

Major Research Paper/Project (MRP)   

Accreditation Canada’s EQual program accredited Canadian undergraduate dietetics program (external link)  or  (PDF file) PDEP accredited undergraduate degree in nutrition with a minimum B average (3.00/4.33) in the last two years of study. Preference is given to dietitians qualified to practice in Canada. Strong oral and written communication skills are required for program entry and success.

Eligibility for the winter 2026 cohort:

All academic requirements need to be completed by the end of the fall 2025 term for applications to be considered eligible for the winter 2026 cohort of the MHSc program.

1) A Statement of Interest Letter:

Please write a personal statement (approximately 500-750 words) that addresses your preparedness for graduate studies in Nutrition and Dietetics.

In your statement, clearly articulate your goals in the field, provide a rationale for pursuing graduate education at this time, highlight your relevant academic and unique lived experiences, and describe your potential contributions to both the classroom learning and the dietetics profession.

2) A Comprehensive, Current Resume (max 6 pages):

Please prepare a comprehensive, well organized and formatted Curriculum Vitae (CV) that effectively showcases your:

  • Relevant experiences (e.g., employment, volunteer work, internships, leadership roles) and transferable skills (e.g., communication, problem-solving, technical abilities)
  • Engagement in scholarly, knowledge translation, and/or creative projects (e.g.  undergraduate research projects, research proposals and ethics review applications, experiences as a paid research assistant or volunteer, research-related publications and presentations/workshop; handouts, programming, social media content, etc.)
  • Significant accomplishments and achievements (e.g., awards, publications, presentations, specific impacts of your work)

Ensure that your CV clearly demonstrates how these elements prepare you for your desired academic or professional goals.

3) Two Letters of Recommendation:

At least one letter must be completed by an academic referee (a faculty member familiar with your academic performance). The second letter may be completed by a professional, non-academic referee. The Graduate Admissions office will contact your referees directly after you complete your online application.

To ensure your referee writes a strong letter that highlights the most relevant aspects of your profile, they should convey how well they know you and in what context, your work ethic, knowledge and skills, leadership abilities, research potential, and connecting your strengths directly to the requirements of the program. 

4) Transcripts For All Relevant Post-Secondary Education:

These transcripts are considered unofficial. If you are currently a student, upload your transcripts after your fall grades are posted. Official transcripts will be requested if an admissions offer is made.

5) Proof of English Language Proficiency:

For those whose previous language of instruction was not English.

6) Confirmation of Completion Form:

Only Accredited Practicum applicants must submit this document. Request a completed ‘confirmation of completion’ form from the accredited undergraduate program that you attended to verify your eligibility.

Supervisors support MRP students with their graduate research work, while providing advice, guidance and mentorship.

Accredited Practicum students do not have a supervisor.

Upon admission to the MRP stream, the graduate program director will contact MRP students to discuss their options for a supervisor.
