SMACT Screening: "Analogue Revolution: How Feminist Media Changed the World"
On the evening of February 25th 2025, students and faculty from across The Creative School, the wider TMU community, and members of the public who share an interest in media, activism, and gender justice gathered in the Eaton Lecture Hall gathered for a screening of “Analogue Revolution: How Feminist Media Changed the World.” The film is the latest feature-length documentary undertaking by Professor Emeritus Dr. Marusya Bociurkiw; it deeply explores the forgotten yet role of analogue print, radio, and film media in Canadian feminist activism from 1970-1990, weaving in interviews with key figures and weaving together their efforts while calling current generations to action for a road forward. After the screening, Dr. Bociurkiw joined Creative School Assistant Professors Dr. Layal Shuman and Dr. Tatyana Terzopoulos for a lively and insightful discussion that reflected upon the importance of archives and community and the role of collective organizing for societal change while grappling with how to address prevailing discrimination in the creative industries and amidst an exceptionally volatile global climate. The event also marked a milestone for the Studio for Media Activism and Critical Thought (SMACT) as the first official event under co-Directors Dr. Terzopoulos’ and Dr. Shuman’s leadership. They thanked Dr. Bociurkiw, who founded the collective in 2013, for her impactful contributions over the last decade, and concluded by sharing the re-imagined lab’s broader mission to provide a critical space and a collective ethos for media/art/design activism and organizing through projects that reflect the diverse needs of the TMU community. Stay tuned for more events in the coming months.
