Challenge Credits

The Challenge Credit Conditions were updated in November 2025. All submissions for the Winter 2026 term will be assessed based on the revised criteria.

A challenge credit grants Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) students an academic credit for a TMU course in recognition of skills and knowledge gained outside the traditional post-secondary school environment (e.g. through work experience.) The experience gained replicates the subject matter of the course material.

  • Students must not exceed the transfer credit limit of 50% of their Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) program requirements (including Letter of Permission, Transfer Credits and Challenge Credits.)
  • A student may receive up to three (3) Challenge Credits during their academic career at TMU.

    • A Challenge Credit refers to a one-term, one-course count course.
    • For the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education certificate programs, a maximum of three (3) one-term, one-course count courses, but not exceeding 50% of the certificate requirements, may be challenged.
  • Not all courses may be challenged.
  • Students must be formally enrolled in a degree or certificate program at TMU to be eligible to apply for a challenge credit.
  • Only courses that are applicable to meeting TMU program requirements will be considered for a challenge credit.
  • Courses already completed at TMU or another post-secondary institution may not be challenged.
  • Students may not challenge a course they have previously been enroled in at TMU or at any other institution; or they have already unsuccessfully challenged.
  • The Teaching Department Challenge Credit application decision is final and may not be appealed.
  • Faculties or programs may apply additional restrictions on Challenge Credits through their bylaws.

    • The Ted Rogers School of Business Management does not allow Challenge Credit for courses taught by the School.
    • The Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, and the Faculty of Science do not allow Challenge Credit for courses taught by their Faculties.
  • Confirm you are eligible
  • Contact the Teaching Department of the course you wish to challenge to determine if the course may be challenged
