Usha George

Usha George is Director of the Toronto Metropolitan Centre for Immigration and Settlement, leading three research studies: a SSHRC Insight Grant on the citizenship experiences of racialized women in Toronto; a SSHRC Partnership Development Grant on Syrian resettlement; and an IRCC-funded Service Delivery Improvement Grant on the entrepreneurial activities of newcomers in Ontario.

Usha served as Dean of the Faculty of Community Services from 2006 to 2016 and from 2016 to 2017 as interim Vice-president, Research and Innovation at Toronto Metropolitan University. In 2015, she was awarded the Errol Aspevig Award for Outstanding Academic Leadership. She is a past director of the Ontario Metropolis Centre of Excellence for Immigration and Settlement (CERIS). Usha’s research and scholarly activities span the continuum of immigrant transition from newcomers to citizens. Her research has attracted over $13.3 million in funding. She has published extensively on immigrant settlement and integration and her work has contributed to policy and program changes in the area of newcomer settlement. She has paid special attention to the intersectionality of oppressions faced by racialized immigrant women.
