Hadeel Sinjab is a graduate student in the Master of Interior Design program at The Creative School, Toronto Metropolitan University. She holds a Bachelor of Interior Design with Honours from Fanshawe College and has earned recognition in design competitions across Canada and the U.S. Her journey has been shaped by both academic excellence and creative exploration, experiences that continue to fuel her drive for innovation and thoughtful design. Her research focus is closely tied to her past experience as a Syrian refugee and immigrant. For Hadeel and her family, moving to Canada was a difficult transition. After the initial excitement wore off, they were faced with homesickness and the challenge of adapting to unfamiliar surroundings. To deal with these feelings of uncertainty, they focused on what they could control and rebuilt their home with the limited resources they had. It took some time, but the result was a functional home that worked for them and achieved a balance between Middle Eastern culture and their new Canadian culture. This experience inspired her to pursue interior design, as she came to understand the value of design and now hopes to create spaces that are comfortable and inspiring for users to work, play, and experience life to the fullest. Her research focuses on design strategies that support immigrant youth’s well-being and social belonging.
