Image Arts: Film alum Peter Denes has built a career at the heart of Canadian cultural storytelling. As an award-winning documentary editor and full member of the Canadian Cinema Editors (CCE), his work in music, television, and comedy has brought defining moments to screens around the world.

Over the past two years, Denes has edited two Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) premieres: The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal (2024), which earned the People’s Choice Documentary Award, and Degrassi: Whatever It Takes (2025), an official selection at this year’s festival. These follow his acclaimed work on Kids in the Hall: Comedy Punks (2022), which debuted at SXSW in 2022.

“Having my work shown in a theatre has always been the dream. After years of creating projects for streamers and cable, where the experience felt one-way and distant, like sending work into the void. Seeing it at TIFF, with a local audience reacting in real time, was incredibly gratifying and affirmed that these are world-class stories worth telling,” says Denes.

Specializing in archival-driven narratives rooted in Canadian identity, history, and community, Denes brings emotional depth to stories at a time when audiences are seeking authentic cultural voices. His trajectory reflects not only personal achievement but also the growing global appetite for Canadian stories.
