Graphic Communications Management (GCM) alumna Areej Syeda recently went across the pond to Germany to represent GCM at the 2023 IARIGAI Conference of Print & Media Research held by Bergische Universität Wuppertal (external link) . There, she presented the research that she had conducted over the last two years in the GCM program with her classmate Lucy Trepanier and with the support and supervision of GCM Professor Dr. Reem El Asaleh.

Along with her team, Syeda spent two years putting together her research before presenting it at the 2023 IARIGAI Conference of Print & Media Research hosted by Bergische Universität Wuppertal (external link)

The study offers a comprehensive overview of integrated technologies, including automation, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), big data, machine learning (ML), and augmented reality (AR), and their applications in the graphic communications industry.

“The findings are especially important, as they will help shape the future of the Graphic Communications Industry, addressing a topic often overlooked and neglected in the field,” said Syeda.

Research findings

Syeda’s research uses a systematic literature review, encompassing both quantitative and qualitative sources to address the following question: “In the Graphic Communications Industry, do the implementations of integrated technologies have an impact on the quality of performance of organizations and the users who have adopted them in the previous 10 years?”

The study dives deep into looking at the opportunities that come with the evolution of integrated technologies and how they affect the different pillars of an organization.

“From creativity to production and management to consumer experience, the study provides a holistic analysis of the evolving landscape of graphic communications management and what it means for both users and organizations alike,” said Syeda.

Collaboration and mentorship

Dr. El Asaleh and Trepanier played a significant role in the success of Syeda’s research project. Dr. El Asaleh provided Syeda with mentorship and guidance throughout the process, helping with the execution of the systematic literature review within the context of a research paper and ensuring it met the formal publication criteria. Trepanier also worked under the supervision of Dr. El Asaleh to identify and create a comprehensive analysis addressing the research question.

“Both Reem and Lucy’s expertise and engagement have allowed this soon-to-be-published paper to become what it is today, both from a publishing and presentation standpoint,” said Syeda.

After two years of hard work, Syeda had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go to Germany and present her research at an international conference. Her research continues to fill a gap within the graphics communications management industry. Still, she also says her experience at the conference helped her learn and exchange ideas with her peers.

“I’ve made friends for life and am looking forward to staying connected with them to keep in touch with the world of academia and to share this research with those interested,” said Syeda.
