Ballet Through the Lens: The Art of Fashion, Costume and Dance

The Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University (opens in new window)  invites you to experience “Ballet Through the Lens: The Art of Fashion, Costume and Dance” from November 22 to December 10, 2023, at a retail space in CF Toronto Eaton Centre.

Attend the community open house on Wednesday, November 22 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and enjoy a live performance by Performance students on the Sephora Bridge on Wednesday, December 6 at 1:00 p.m. The retail space is located on Level #2 of the CF Toronto Eaton Centre, just south of the Apple Store. 

Co-curated by Sofia Beraldo and Patrick Taylor, Master of Arts in Fashion at The Creative School, Toronto Metropolitan University, the exhibition beautifully weaves together Performance and Costume research, offering a unique insight into the art of creating dance costumes.

“Ballet at the Railway Station” captures the partnership between Performance at The Creative School and Fall for Dance North, showcasing dancers in daily class at Toronto Union Station, bringing ballet to the public.

“Fashion-Inspired Ballet” is a collaboration between the Fashion Research Collection (FRC) and Master of Arts in Fashion students at The Creative School, TMU. Explore the intersection of fashion and dance. The garments featured in this exhibition are from Ian Spurling’s original designs for Elite Syncopations, a contemporary plotless ballet that first premiered in 1974, and remounted for The National Ballet of Canada in 1978. Travel back in time with decommissioned costumes from the National Ballet, costume renderings, images, and more.
