Second Stage Dance
Second Stage Dance is a Canadian charity focused on making dance more accessible, affordable, and sustainable for all.
Dance is a powerful tool for physical health, mental wellbeing, and confidence-building, yet it remains financially inaccessible for many families. The cost of dancewear, shoes, and costumes (which often exceeds hundreds of dollars per season) creates a significant barrier especially for those in underserved communities. At the same time, the dance industry generates large volumes of lightly used items each year, many of which are discarded without a clear pathway for reuse.
This creates a dual problem of inequity and waste. Talented dancers are forced to quit or never begin, while usable resources continue to end up in landfills.
Second Stage Dance was born from witnessing both sides of this gap firsthand. Our vision emerged from the need for a trusted, organized system that moves quality dance items into the hands of those who need them most.
As a donation based charity, we collect dancewear, shoes, and costumes to create our central inventory. With each item going through a quality-check before matching it with a dancer or community programs at no or low cost. Acting as a neutral facilitator, we bridge studios, families, and partners while piloting a circular-fashion-forward system in the arts sector.
Since launch, Second Stage Dance has built a growing inventory, established partnerships both in the local and global community while also reducing clothing waste through recycling items not fit for circulation.
