Admissions Timeline

Generally the program will begin reviewing applications after the first consideration deadline in January. Offers of admission will begin mid-to-late-March and continue throughout the spring and summer until the program is full.

MA in Media Production (1 Year)

Application to Media Production MA

The ideal student for this program will have a strong undergraduate media education, a demonstrated knowledge of the production tools of some form of media production as well as media production or business/management experience. The program may also accept highly motivated individuals from other fields of study with a desire to develop intensive knowledge in our disciplines.

  • Four year undergraduate Bachelor's degree (or equivalent), preferably in a media related field
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 / 4.33 (B), or equivalent, in the final half of the program
  • Official transcripts for all relevant post-secondary education

All applicants (including those who have completed a degree internationally or at a French-speaking institution) will be required to provide certification of English language proficiency through one of the accepted examinations listed in the YSGPS admissions website unless:

  • they have completed two or more years of full-time postsecondary education at a Canadian university.
  • they have completed two or more years of full-time postsecondary education at a university at which English was the primary language of instruction.
  • they have completed a graduate degree at a university where English was the primary language of instruction.

For exemption from this requirement, applicants are required to provide an official statement from their institution's Registrar's Office confirming the use of English as the Medium of Instruction for the duration of their study. This letter will be required to be submitted through the applicant portal once you have applied and have been asked to submit your documents. This applies to all internationally educated applicants, including those that are currently studying within North America.

Please note, meeting the minimum English proficiency requirements does not guarantee admission. Programs may set additional requirements to these minimum standards.

Please answer the following questions in your written statement (max 500 words):

  1. Media is in flux. Where do you see the greatest/most exciting new opportunities? What is ripe for change? In which area of media theory and practice are you hoping to become a creator-scholar?
  2. Outline the media production project or major research paper you would like to do in the Master of Arts in Media Production program and why you would like to produce it.
  3. Explain how your project is innovative and/or why it would deepen and build on your current body of work. Describe how it will demonstrate excellence in media production. Describe how it will inform current academic research in your area of interest and contribute to the body of knowledge within the media industry and the academic research of our discipline. Please include references to back up your explanation.
  4. Name three faculty members who you feel would be appropriate as your Supervisor. If a faculty member has already agreed to act as your Supervisor for your research and/or creative work, please indicate that, and this will be taken into account in the application process. A list of recent projects and their Supervisors can be found on the Project Abstracts page.  Some of their bios can be found on the RTA faculty page. You can also reach out to any member of the Yeates School of Graduate Studies who you think would be a good fit.   5. Please describe the skills you currently possess and what skills you would need to add or build in order to complete your proposed project.

This should note your career achievements, including any prior production and/or media management experience.

Two Letters of Recommendation are required for each application. Preferably, the two recommendations should be from academic referees (e.g. former professors or research supervisors). However, one recommendation may be substituted from a current or previous employer.

This can be in written or audio/video/multimedia form and may include up to three (3) pieces. The committee will read your written work, examine several minutes of your video or audio submission, navigate your web design, or otherwise inspect your portfolio as appropriate. For larger production material, we encourage you to provide edited excerpts.

Along with your media submission, please enclose a statement describing the process underlying the development of the submission itself. If your work has been professionally critiqued or presented publicly, please note this as well and include reviews.

Applicants are encouraged to use online posting sites, such as YouTube or Vimeo for audio/video files.

Important Note: The admissions online portal will only accept one (pdf) portfolio file. Please provide the URL for your portfolio content, along with the statement about your work, in the pdf document.

Fees for both international and domestic students will be posted on the fees section of the Registrar's Office website (see link below). 

Tuition is calculated by year for each program, it is not dependent on the number of courses taken per term. 

As per the 2022 fee schedule, tuition fees reported for the program are as follows:

  • Domestic: $10,502.74  - $11,254.18
  • International: $25,588.62

Tuition is a yearly charge, which is broken into three payments, each due at the beginning of each term (September, January and May).

The allocation of scholarships will be on a competitive basis and will be consistent with TMU’s policies concerning access, equity and research integrity, and the criteria established by The Media Production Graduate Program Committee. The Committee will oversee the evaluation of candidates and the selection of award winners.

You will be automatically considered for the following scholarships based on your admissions application:

  • Ontario Graduate Fellowship (OGF): valued at $12,000.
  • TMU Graduate Fellowship (TMUGF): starting at $2000, maximum value of $12,000.
  • TMU Graduate Development Award (TMUGDA): maximum value of $10,000.

Media Production MBA Pathway (2 Years)

Application to Media Production MA (1st year)

Students interested in the Media Production MBA pathway, must apply to the Media Production MA program first. 

Students who have been admitted to the Media Production MA can apply for admission to the Media Production MBA Pathway starting in the Fall term of their first year, for admission in the Spring term.

Two years of work experience, GMAT and online interview will be required for admission into the Media Production MBA Pathway.

Application to the MBA (2nd year)

Students pursuing the MA in Media Production starting in the Fall would apply to the Ted Rogers MBA program the following Spring intake. The applicant portal for the Spring intake will open in early November. Visit the MBA website for upcoming application deadlines

Applicants should use their existing OUAC username and password (external link)  to apply to the program. When applying to the MBA program, applicants can select the Media Production MBA Pathway under the specialization field to indicate their interest in this option.

In approximately 500 words, outline your reasons for pursuing an MBA, your career objectives, and how your previous studies and experience have prepared you for the program.

For the MBA Pathway application the admissions committee will use the same letters of recommendation you submitted for the Media Production MA application.

We accept valid scores from the original GMAT and the GMAT Focus Edition exam, as well as valid scores from the new and the original GRE General Test. Please visit the test provider’s websites for more information.

Your highest valid GMAT (external link) 

score will be used for consideration. An official GMAT score should be submitted using GMAT code 3QP-56-33. A GRE (external link) 

score can also be considered in place of a GMAT score. GRE reports can be submitted using GRE code 1991. A copy of a GMAT or GRE score report must also be uploaded to your application. 

Please note: Ted Rogers undergraduate alumni are eligible to apply without submitting a GMAT score, given they meet all other admission requirements. Read more details in the news story Ted Rogers MBA increases accessibility for undergraduate alumni. Ted Rogers undergraduate alumni who would like to apply under the alumni GMAT waiver benefit must also upload a document to this section of their application to be marked as complete. The document should include a statement that identifies the applicant as a Ted Rogers undergraduate alumni.

All applicants must upload a document to the GMAT/GRE section of their application for it to be marked as complete.

After submitting your application, you will be contacted to complete an online video interview. Please expect communication from the Ted Rogers MBA team through Kira Talent, the platform used by the program to host online video interviews

Graduate tuition fees are paid on a semester basis and are based on the number of course credits taken per semester. MBA students pay for 11 course credits for the full core program which includes the 7 core course credits, 6 half course credit electives and capstone project. Any required Foundation courses are an additional fee per course.

Please note: In the Graduate Tuition and Fees tables, 1 course credit is equivalent to 1 unit. Graduate fees are set annually in the Summer and are subject to change.

There are a number of funding packages – internal and external – available to Ted Rogers MBA students.

All applications are reviewed for entrance funding during the application process. 

Thanks to a $15 million donation from Ted and Loretta Rogers, each year the Ted Rogers School of Management issues a total of 24 Graduate Entrance Scholarships and Awards worth up to $20,000 each.

Ted Rogers School Graduate Entrance Scholarship

The criteria for a Ted Rogers Graduate Entrance Scholarship is based solely on demonstrated academic excellence. This scholarship is open to full-time and part-time domestic applicants and full-time international applicants. Please indicate your interest in being considered for this scholarship when applying to the program on your application form. Scholarships are worth up to $20,000 each for full-time and up to $5,000 each for part-time candidates.

 Ted Rogers School Graduate Entrance Award

The criteria for a Ted Rogers Graduate Entrance Award include academic excellence, extracurricular/community involvement, and financial need. Successful applicants (domestic students only) to the program will receive an application from the administrator before the start of the studies.

Ted Rogers MBA Black Graduate Leadership Awards

The Ted Rogers MBA Black Graduate Leadership award has been developed to support domestic full-time or flex full-time Black graduate students pursuing their studies at the Ted Rogers School of Management.

These awards recognize demonstrated leadership and community involvement, and alleviate some of the financial burden associated with graduate education.

Application Deadline:

First Consideration - March 1, 2024

Applications for this award will be reviewed on an ongoing basis past the first consideration deadline based on funding availability.   

Value and Duration:

The expendable funds will provide up to three (3) $10,000 awards for the 2024-2025 academic year. Funding for the award will be made available to eligible students in the Fall/Winter/Spring terms.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Candidates who are Canadian citizens, landed immigrants/permanent residents or protected persons who have been issued a Protected Persons Status Document (PPSD) and have been accepted to the Ted Rogers MBA Full-Time or Flex Full-Time MBA Program.
  • Candidates who self-identify as Black.

Weighted Criteria:

  • Provide a 500-word statement outlining your leadership and community involvement, demonstrating the financial impact of the award.
  • Sign-off on declaration

How to apply:

  1. Once a student has been accepted into the MBA program, they need to complete the  (PDF file) Ted Rogers MBA Black Graduate Leadership Awards form (opens in new window)  which includes their 500-word statement, and declaration.
  2. Students would then scan and send this form to mba@torontomu.ca using the subject line “Ted Rogers MBA Black Graduate Leadership Award” by the March 1, 2024 first consideration date. Award applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis past the first consideration deadline based on funding availability.

Ted Rogers MBA Indigenous Graduate Leadership Awards

The Ted Rogers MBA Indigenous Graduate Leadership awards are available to domestic full-time or flex full-time (3-5 course credits per semester) Master of Business Administration applicants accepted into graduate studies.

These awards seek to address the historical inequities in access to graduate education in Canada experienced by Indigenous students and the underrepresentation of Indigenous students within MBA programs. The criteria for the awards are based on demonstrated leadership, community involvement and financial need.

Application Deadline:

First Consideration: March 1, 2024

Applications for this award will be reviewed on an ongoing basis past the first consideration deadline based on funding availability.   

Value and Duration:

The expendable funds will provide up to two (2) $10,000 awards for the 2024-2025 academic year. Funding for the award will be made available to eligible students in the Fall/Winter/Spring terms.

Candidates who self-identify as an Indigenous person to the land we know as Canada (including First Nations (Status/Non-Status), Metis, or Inuit cultural and/or ancestral background) and have been accepted to the Ted Rogers MBA Full-Time or Flex Full-Time MBA Program.

  • Provide a 500-word statement outlining your leadership and community involvement, demonstrating the financial impact of the award. 
  • Sign-off on declaration

Graduate Scholarships and Awards

Students must meet all MBA admission requirements to be considered for the MBA program. Documentation such as unofficial transcripts and a resume won’t need to be uploaded to the applicant portal.

Research Assistants

As a Research Assistant (RA), students assist principal investigators in conducting research activities not related to the students' studies.

Graduate (Teaching) Assistants

GAs are graduate students who are employed to assist with teaching or related duties. Full-time graduate students can be employed for a maximum of 10 hours per week as GAs.

Zone Learning is a new model of experiential learning built to prepare students for the 21st-century workplace. Offered only at Toronto Met, it lets students apply their degree coursework to the development of startups, causes, companies, projects or ventures.

Admissions Awards

    Value ranges from $2,000 to $6,000.
  • Toronto Metropolitan Graduate Development Award (TMGDA)
    Value ranges from $2,000 to $6,000.
  • Ontario Graduate Fellowship (OGF)  
    Value is $12,000 for one year.

Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) / Toronto Met Graduate Scholarship (TMGS)

  • $15,000 award for one year.
  • Eligible applicants will be notified by the program to submit an application around February/March. 
  • For students with an A- in each of the last two years of completed study.

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Canada Graduate Scholarship (SSHRC CGS-M)

  • $17,500 award for one year.
  • For Domestic applicants with an A- avg. in each of the last two years of completed study.
  • Application deadline is Dec 1; award is granted for the following Fall term.
