Performance Production: Post Grad with Brenda Quỳnh Diep
Performance at The Creative School focuses on preparing our graduates with a range of skills they can use to succeed in any industry. For Performance Production + Design students explore production management, creative technologies and design applications for live entertainment, and build the technical, creative and leadership skills necessary to produce large-scale productions. They also explore all facets of production design — from costume and scenery, to lighting, projection, and audio — and gain hands-on experience by participating in live shows and industry collaborations. Following convocation, we are focusing on the different paths our students take upon graduating.
This week Performance Production grad Brenda Quỳnh Diep shares some of their favourite moments from the Production program!
I'm looking forward to joining the IATSE local 828 for painters and prop makers and picking up gigs alongside the awesome people I've connected with throughout my time at performance!
My time at Performance has been both challenging and fulfilling. I specialize in scenic design, carpentry, props building, and scenic painting. I participated in TMU's Musical Theatre Company (TMTC) as their scenic designer in 2022, and as for calls, I've held production assistant, props crew, scenic design, and head of props roles at the School of Performance.
My favourite memory from my time at Performance has to be designing the set for Acting 3's Lysistrata this past semester. I co-designed the set alongside Tess Thomas (currently in 3rd year) who designed The Bacchae and Ximena Martinez Luebbert (currently in 2nd year) who was our scenic design assistant. Getting to collaborate with like-minded artists and seeing our ambitious ideas come to fruition was the greatest experience I could ever ask for!
I wish I could tell my first year self two things: one, quarantine will not last forever! And two, you are not falling behind or running late; take breaks, take care of your mental health, and you will always have more time and more opportunities. Passion may never run out but your energy will! Burnout is real!
