Production + Design Students Welcome IATSE 58 Representatives

Today, Production + Design students welcomed 2013 alumni Harrison Bye and Andrew McAllister to their class. Harrison and Andrew are actively involved with IATSE 58 (external link) , Toronto’s Stagehands’ Union, for which they co-chair the Young Workers Committee. Both grads shared a bit about their paths since graduating, each highlighting the positive change they saw occurring in their industry as a motivating factor to becoming involved in the union. Through the Young Workers Committee, they work to link their membership with local labour issues that are occurring in Toronto and beyond. Additionally they foster a supportive network with weekly check-in calls, and frequent virtual social events. Current students spent the hour in dialogue with Harrison and Andrew, learning about the process of becoming a union member, the benefits of membership, and the ongoing changes occurring towards a safer and more inclusive workplace in the live events sector.
