What to expect

Despite treaties being among the “highest laws of the land,” they remain deeply misunderstood, malinterpreted, and flattened through dominating Canadian narratives. Countermapping is one tool to resist static interpretations of treaty. How can Indigenous diplomacy, histories, and relationships be reflected on a map to disrupt damaging treaty narratives and recenter Indigenous perspectives on treaties?

Join Yellowhead Institute on November 5th at 3:30 PM for a demo on the treaty map and discussion on treaties, countermapping, and education.

About the organizers/team

This presentation is hosted by Yellowhead Institute (external link)  in cooperation with the Indigenous Education Council and Indigenous Events and Special Projects.

This event is part of Treaties Recognition Week

This event is part of Indigenous Education and Treaties Recognition Week at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU).

Programming throughout the week aims to deepen understanding of Indigenous experiences, treaty rights and treaty relationships in Canada, all contributing to the broader work toward reconciliation.

Treaties Recognition Week honours the importance of treaties, empowering students, faculty and staff with greater awareness and understanding of their relevance today. In 2016, Ontario passed the first legislation (external link)  of its kind in Canada, declaring the first full week of November as Treaties Recognition Week.

Accessibility

This event is wheelchair accessible. TMU is committed to the accessibility and inclusion of persons with disabilities. If you require any additional accessibility accommodations to ensure your full participation.
