Performance Acting alum Thomas Swayne has made a name for himself as a theatre producer for some of the biggest musicals worldwide including New York, New York, The Ferryman and The Piano Lesson. Most recently, he’s celebrating the success for his role as producer on the hit Broadway musical revival of Merrily We Roll Along (external link) , which brought home seven Tony nominations and four wins.

Following sold-out runs in London and at the New York Theatre Workshop, Maria Friedman’s celebrated rendition of this iconic musical has taken Broadway by storm. Featuring one of Stephen Sondheim's most cherished and introspective scores, the musical moves backwards in time, charting the tumultuous relationship between three lifelong friends, portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, and Lindsay Mendez. Spanning nearly two decades, the narrative weaves through their lives as they navigate the worlds of success, show business, and unbreakable bonds.

Behind-the-scenes: a Broadway production

With skills that he gained through the Performance Acting program and his decade-long career as a producer, Swayne became an asset on set of the musical revival. Having previously contributed to the success of numerous productions, including the Toronto Ed Mirvish Theatre's staging of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Swayne's expertise spans a broad spectrum of responsibilities.

"Every day is different," Swayne explains. "It involves various meetings and work on creative, casting, production, design, marketing, budgets, press, legal, finance, contracts, and investment. You have to know a little bit about a lot of topics and ultimately be good at delegating and trusting your team—and hiring the right people."

A tour de force

Since its initial Broadway premier back in 1981, Merrily We Roll Along’s exploration of the human experience, framed by Sondheim’s evocative compositions, has resonated with audiences around the world–including Swayne. What’s more, it offers a poignant reflection on many of life's milestones and the bonds forged and forgotten.

“The show is one of the most beautiful and touching pieces of theatre I've ever been a part of,” stated Swayne. “I don't think I've ever watched the show and not cried. My most vivid memory of my time on the show was watching the Broadway opening night performance with my wife and best friends. The production really makes you think about your life, the decisions you've made and how those decisions have impacted the people you love...we were all a weeping mess.”
