What is the global governance of migration? Why is it emerging? Which are the major institutions and actors involved? Can we distinguish between the global governance of migration and that of asylum? And is there such a thing as an orderly, safe and regular migration? Anna Triandafyllidou will comment on why and how the global governance of migration-and-asylum (hyphenated on purpose) is emerging today under a blueprint that emphasizes orderly, safe, regular flows when the reality is that most flows are disorderly, unsafe, and partly regular or indeed largely unauthorized. Anna will also discuss how the global governance of migration and asylum is inscribed in the paradigm of risk society and why we need to go beyond this paradigm acknowledging uncertainty and rethinking migration and asylum governance as ‘mess management’.
