Zarif Masud
I am a PhD student in Computer Engineering at Toronto Metropolitan University, co-supervised by Dr. Ebrahim Bagheri and Dr. Ishtiaque Ahmed. My research interests sit at the intersection of responsible AI, AI ethics, social computing, and migration studies. Using technical expertise in natural language processing and information retrieval and drawing on rich body of work in critical computing studies, I employ a diverse array of data sources such as data from social media platforms, news media, and parliamentary debates to explore how immigrants and immigration are discussed across media, the barriers they face in integration, and how AI-driven systems mediate these processes. This line of inquiry can extend beyond immigration to the use of AI and data driven systems in governance as a whole, exploring risks they pose, particularly to vulnerable communities, and ethical standards to safeguard human rights.
