Alemtsehay Subhatu
Alemtsehay Subhatu is a Senior Research Associate at Bridging Divides at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), where her expertise aligns with the Place and Infrastructure research theme. From 2023 to 2025, Alemtsehay Subhatu was a doctoral researcher at the Laboratory of Innovations in Transportation (LiTrans), TMU. Her research focuses on urban markets and urban infrastructure services from a migrant and integration perspective using an ontological approach and system dynamics model. She serves as an assistant professor at Mekelle University, Ethiopia, and participates in research coordination and activities related to climate change and sustainable development.
Alemtsehay received her PhD in Geography and Sustainable Development from Bern University, Switzerland. She received the Best Young Papers award in 2016 in Belgard, Serbia and a research grant fund award from the International Fund for Science (IFS) in 2015. She also received a Swiss Government excellence scholarship in 2013. From 2011 to 2014, she served as a soil and water management researcher at Debre Birhan Regional Agricultural Research Institute in Ethiopia. She is passionate about personal development, life purpose, and sustainability—especially in ways that support a healthy, balanced life and a deeper connection with nature. Her interest in sustainability comes from a commitment to living in harmony with the environment and promoting true, lasting, and meaningful practices.
